ipod wont sync

My Mac and Ipod both have the latest software updates but when i plug my ipod into the mac it says "The iPod “Grace Emily Davison’s iPod” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes." - i have done this (it now has the latest version) and it still wont work. Someone please help!
